In November 2023, Jacobs Solutions announced a definitive merger agreement to spin off and combine its Critical Mission Solutions (CMS) and Cyber & Intelligence (C&I) government services businesses with Amentum. The combined organization will be a publicly traded company.
Jacobs Solutions is a US based company that provides consulting, technical, scientific and project delivery services for the government and private sector. It is involved in the management and operation of the Nevada National Security Site, which maintains facilities related to nuclear weapon stockpiling.
Amentum is a government services company that became privately-held when launched as an independent company in 2020, after it had spun off from AECOM. It is part of the team managing and operating the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and has performed readiness assessment at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, responsible for nuclear weapons design and maintenance.
Mergers and acquisitions continue to narrow competition space for contract awards in the nuclear weapons industry. Both Jacobs Solutions and Amentum are rumoured to be in the running for the new management contract of the Pantex Plant. The competition is held by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)
who is yet to find a new manager for the site after ending its deal with Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) for failing to meet safety and security standards, amounting to “unacceptable risk” in 2020.The planned merger would further reduce the pool of candidates to take over from CNS.
